Our Story

Nightstop's story began began back in 1985 when the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Faith in the City report highlighted the growing challenges of homelessness and called for a community response.

Church groups started to consider how they could be part of the solution. Just two years later, in 1987, the first Nightstop opened in Leeds.

During the following few years, the vision for Nightstop spread to communities in Durham, Birmingham and Leamington Spa where further services were developed. Nightstop started to develop nationally, and the national network was established in 1999.

In December 2007, after consultation with and support from local Nightstop services, Nightstop UK became part of Depaul UK - to become Depaul Nightstop UK.

Almost 30 years after the first Nightstop was established, we have 33 Nightstops running around the country from Edinburgh to Devon.

Now we look to a future where no young person has to sleep in an unsafe place, and we are planning to develop new services in areas where we don't have already have a Nightstop.

If you're interested in setting a Nightstop in your area, please get in touch.
